The Results:

Break Even V explored the use of Sherry casks in the maturation and finishing of single malt whiskies from around the world. I decided to run this tasting blind, pitting some well known and respected names against smaller and lesser known single malt producers. By running these tastings blind, we can put aside any outside bias or pre conceived expectations of what we should be tasting. And the results were certainly interesting, with some of the youngest whiskies of the night scoring in favour of some serious age statements.

The fight for first place came down to a single vote, with Heartwood only just taking the cake over Kavalan. Ledaig 18 also deserves a special mention, having divided the room with it’s heavy peat influence, it still ended up with a median score of 8.5/10. Thank you again to everyone who helped to make it such a great afternoon, looking forward to seeing you all at the next round.

‘Glendronach Master Distiller, Billy Walker, has once again entered the deepest, darkest depths of the Glendronach warehouse to specially select a handful of top performing casks to be bottled as the GlenDronach ‘Single Cask Limited Releases’. It’s another collection involving a diverse selection of barrels, hogsheads, puncheons and butts, all ex-Sherry and all bottled uncut, unchill-filtered and colouring free. Like last year’s line up, the volumes are next to nothing, with no one as yet caving into opening a bottle, so no tasting notes either. In short, an offer for collectors who are quick on the draw.
