– CTZ is not a blend, merely a way of acknowledging that Columbus, Tomahawk, and Zeus are all the same cultivar, so they are interchangeable. Columbus and Tomahawk are the exact same Variety while Zeus is so Bitterly similar it finds it’s way in. The name struggle has to do with Copyright and Patents between Yakima Chief, Inc, and Charles E. Zimmerman who originally produced the variety, resulted in a joint venture going by the name of HUSA-CEZ, LLC between Charles and Hopunion USA. All three Hops act as a Dual Purpose Variety imparting strong Bittering qualities along with a Resinous, Tropical, Pine-Needle and Citrus-like Aroma. All three Hops have an AA content of 14-17% and CTZ is commonly used in Imperial IPA’s, Stouts and American Pale Ales.
